Laptop rebuild v Buy new

Ok after 3 days of dicking around with my wife's lap top I brought it to a small tech shop (The Tech Depot, Hyannis, Ma.) Turns out that the HD and 1 RAM stick crapped out. Trying to decide whether to spend $250-300 to repair/upgrade or $500-600 and buy her a new one.
Her laptop was/is: Acer 5610z, Intel dualcore 1.6mHz, if I was to rebiuld I was thinking of
this drive:
Seagate ST95005620AS Momentus XT 500GB Solid State Hybrid Drive - 500GB, 7200 RPM, SATA 3Gb/s at TigerDirect.com
and 4 gig of RAM

vs:

some prebuilt POS from best buy or dell.com for around $500-600

Druids is not a bad buy, but it is an abused, hopped-up Dell.

I would say, Invest in the cheapest Korean shitbox parts and get that laptop up and running, sell it on Craigslist, and then either buy Druids laptop and mailorder a battery, OR go to the dell outlet or tigerdirect or newegg and get a scratch and dent prebuilt.

what is her using? ( does she dl a lot, gaming, just mailing, ect ...)

She uses it for e-mail, banking, FB and Skype.
And it's the machine we take on vacation. Not used for gaming except Pogo ocasonaly.

No longer matters, hit a $500 scratch ticket so I bought her a cheap Gateway at BestBuy so she would stop bitching.

for the use you mentioned below you don't have to dig too much, you can fin decent laptops for very low prices.
what should be important is your internet provider specifications.

By keeping the previous one to repair It and give It to your daughter you kill two birds with one stone, good idea.
